There is also an increasing demand from the public in consciousness in recent years, with people wanting to live in environmentally friendly, cost efficient homes.
The Social Housing, Local Authority sector is leading the way in affordable warmth initiatives, environmental issues, and finding ways to reduce carbon emissions in their buildings.

Welsh Government wants to continue to drive up the standard of existing social housing, and WHQS2023 is a demanding standard which all social landlords in Wales will be legally obliged to meet.
The purpose of this Welsh Housing Quality Standard 2023 (WHQS2023) is to improve the quality of social homes in Wales.

The strategy in Social Housing, and local Authorities for achieving Net Zero, is a fabric first approach. Firstly, looking at the fabric of the property, to see what can be improved or upgraded.
This might be as simple as adding loft insulation or insulating the walls. It could involve replacing the windows to install / improve double or triple glazing.
There is however a balance, taking account of ventilation, so that the homes do not become airtight boxes, lacking fresh air. Damp and mould has to be considered!
